Motivation Monday- You Are Stronger Than You Know

I sing, I play several instruments, I knit, I like to read, and also to write.  
I am decidedly one of those "artsy" people.
When I am making something I am in my element.  But when it comes to athletic endeavors, 
I feel like the proverbial fish out of water.

I was never an athletic kid.  Do you remember that kid who got picked last for teams? Yep- that was me.  And let me tell you, when you hear the sigh (ok, sometimes it was a full-on groan) from the team that got stuck with you, you get the message pretty quick.  You are not good enough.


So I did what I was good at.  I made music and enjoyed my life, safe in the knowledge that I was not athletic anyway so why even try?

Then I was a stay-at-home, pregnant mom with a 2 1/2 year-old.  And we needed to get out of the house.  I started putting Katie in the stroller and we walked our mornings away.

After Mandy was born I headed back out again.  The fresh air & movement was good for all of us.

And then one day I decided to run.


I really didn't plan to do it and I certainly didn't tell anyone about it.  I mean, I'm not an athlete.  Would people think I wasn't good enough because I'm not fast?  I certainly thought so.

I completed the Couch to 5K program (which I highly recommend) and ran my first 5K.  Only a few, trusted people knew where I was going and I went alone.  If I was about to fail there was no need to do it with an audience.

And I loved every minute of it!

For the first time in my life I felt like my body was capable of something!


Over time I kept signing up for 5Ks and started invited family & friends along.  These days my crew often requires more than one car to get to local races.  Grandma & the little ones walk while Kristina (my BRF/sis-in-law) and I do the running.  My oldest daughter, Katie runs with us now.

These days I care less about my finish time and more about the experience.  
Fun fact: Sweating together often leads to laughing together!


So why am I telling you this?  Because I want you to get out there.  
Am I telling you to start running?  No - that's up to you.

But I am saying that you should do something you never thought you could. 
 Take a risk, and see what happens.  
I'm willing to bet that you are stronger than you know.
