Many have asked me why I allow this to go on, so here are my reasons.
(read all the way to the end and you'll get a special treat- Ruger will sing for you!)
1. Pets teach responsibility.
Go ahead, complain that your kids don't do laundry or clean their rooms. Seriously, those things are no fun! Give them a living, breathing friend to take care of and watch them show you how responsible they can be.
2. The pets don't judge you.
The Jr. High years can be tough. Wear the wrong socks and you can get made fun of all day. Guess what? The dog doesn't care if you wear the same sweat pants all weekend. He still thinks you're great.(in fact, I think Ruger enjoys us more when things get stinky)
3. They don't ask questions.
When I was sick last month everyone wanted to know how I was doing. Well-meaning friends & family would ask, "Are you feeling any better?" and then look disappointed when I said no. Ruger didn't ask. He just followed my lead when I decided it was time for a nap.
4. Respect for living things makes us better people.
I want my kids to care when someone is hurting. I like that they look out for their pets and alert me when "the gecko doesn't look happy". (yep, that happened this morning)
5. They are just entertaining.
And I like to be entertained!
