10 Things You Shouldn't Say to Your Friend Who is Trying to Lose Weight

I hear it all the time.
People tell me that they are all excited about changing their lifestyles.

They've done their research, done their shopping, chopped their produce,
and they are ready to begin eating healthy!

So they share their happy news with friends & family and the response... well,... it isn't what they hoped.  They were hoping for encouragement! It's not unreasonable to think that the people who love you will be happy for you if you're getting healthier, is it?

Now I know that you want to be supportive so let me help-
here is my list of things you SHOULD NOT say to your friend
who has decided that she is going to lose weight!

1. "You look fine the way you are."
I know you think this is a compliment but it's really not.  
You've just negated all of her real concerns about the way she looks, her health, and/or her well-being.

2. "I could never eat that way."
She didn't ask you to change anything about yourself.  She's simply sharing her choices with you.

3. "You're no fun anymore."
I am fun with or without ice cream.  
If you only think I'm fun when I'm eating garbage, you don't really know me that well at all.

4. "You can have a cheeseburger sometimes, y'know!"
Yes, she knows.  She's just choosing not to have one right now.  Maybe she doesn't want it. 
Maybe she knows she'll feel like crap afterwards.  Maybe she knows she can't stop at one.

5. You make me feel guilty for enjoying (insert crappy food here).
That's just silly.  Eat what you want.  And if you're going around feeling guilty about your food, maybe you need to deal with that.  Don't make it your friend's problem.

6. But it's a holiday! (or someone's birthday, or Friday night, etc.)
I'm pretty sure that crappy food has the same effect on my body regardless of the day of the week.  If I choose to indulge on a special occasion, I'll do it.  I don't need you to remind me.

7. Just don't get too skinny.
Ok, and you try not to get too ridiculous.

8. But I made this just for you!
And thank you for the side order of guilt you just threw in.

9. I hate to see you depriving yourself.
Unless your friend is actually starving herself, this one has no merit.
Your friend is really trying to treat herself well.  She's fueling her body.
She's working hard at changing her mindset.  That's not deprivation.

10.  I should really join you.
Actually, PLEASE say this one if you mean it.
Your friend would love your support on her weight loss journey.  She'd love a partner.
Don't get her hopes up if you're just talking.

I've got a plan and I'm sticking with it.

Sundays are spent chopping veggies in order to be sure that I'm prepared.
