The big event is finished and there's no running scheduled for today.
That's a good thing because my legs are really sore.
What's a runner Mama to do on the day after a half marathon?
Bake some zucchini muffins!
I used StuftMama's recipe and the girls helped with the baking. They are delicious!
We went to the library and stopped at our favorite grocery store.
All in all, it was a relaxing day and just what I needed.
So, I'm going to take some time and tell you about my new favorite gadget.
I was fortunate enough to receive a BodyMedia CORE Armband to try out.
You can see it in this picture of me & Katie at an amusement park.
(More on how much I hate amusement parks some other time)
What does it do?
The CORE Armband measures your activity throughout the day and your sleep at night.
You wear it up to 23 hours a day.
The Armband syncs with your computer where all your information goes into the Activity Manager.
You enter the food you've eaten throughout the day and the Activity Manager determines whether you have burned more or less calories than you've taken in.
Why do I like it?
First, it's small. After the first two days I barely noticed that I was wearing it. The band is soft and comfortable. It weighs almost nothing.
Second, and perhaps most importantly, the data provided by the Activity Manager is priceless.
I learned that I was eating a lot more than I thought. I consider myself to be a fairly healthy eater, so I couldn't figure out why I was having trouble losing weight. The answer was so simple. I can really eat when I'm not taking note of my food choices.
I also learned that being busy is not the same as being active. The BodyMedia band measures your activity level all the time. So, even as I sit here typing I am burning some calories. Of course, those calories are nothing compared to the burn I did yesterday when I ran a half marathon.
So while I might think of myself as being active and always on the go, I was probably over-estimating my daily calorie burn. And I was probably doing what so many runners do, saying to myself, "I can have that cookie- I ran today."
Now I have hard numbers to tell me whether or not that statement is true.
Third, I like the food database that is included with the Activity Manager.
When it's time to add meals, the site allows you to search for foods that are already in the database or add foods. It also allows the creation of recipes. For instance, I have pretty much the same breakfast smoothie every day. I was able to create a recipe for it and each day I add it with one click instead of individually selecting a banana, almond milk, protein powder, etc.
Fourth, the BodyMedia CORE Armband is not just for people who would like to lose weight. It allows the user to select a personal health goal.
It also gives Nutrition Analysis information. As we all know, all calories are not created equal. I don't want to think about what would happen to me if I filled my calorie allotment with Twinkies.
So, the Activity Manager will track your food choices over 3 days and give you back a Nutrition Assessment.
Fifth, I am fascinated by the information provided on sleep.
Let me show you last night...
I was lying down this whole time. The black sections indicate time when I was asleep. The grey sections indicate times I was awake. So, if I say that I went to bed at 11:00 PM and slept until 6:00 AM, that's not quite correct is it?
Why is this important?
Because sleep (or lack of it) has been directly linked to weight loss (or weight gain).
I shouldn't be shocked that information is powerful, but I am. I have lost 3 lbs since I started wearing the CORE Armband. Those pounds have been stubbornly sticking around for way too long. I am looking forward to a few more pounds disappearing soon.
