The American Council on Exercise has a series of Fit Facts sheets that provide useful, concise information on various fitness related topics.
Check out the one on children & running here.
A couple highlights:
1. Carry water. Kids dehydrate more easily than adults. Take water for them on short runs when you wouldn't necessarily take it for yourself.
2. Encourage good form. No clenched fists, no slapping feet on the ground. Tell them to "run lightly".
3. Not too far. This information says that children under the age of 14 should never run more than 3 miles. Personally, I find this number to be awfully specific- I would prefer to say that kids shouldn't be pushed too far too soon.
4. Keep it fun. Or as we like to say, "Run Wild!"
