Her Times 5K Race Report

Saturday morning dawned rainy and chilly, but the weather would not deter us!  I packed the bags, Katie & Mandy got dressed and we picked up Grandma Gloria.  The starting line of the Her Times 5K was waiting for us!

Grandma & Mandy were walking the 5K- they don't care about speed. They just enjoy the experience. They head out armed with Gatorade, crackers and a whole repertoire of songs to sing along the way!  When we saw them at the finish line they were holding hands and grinning from ear to ear.

Katie & I were running.  As we lined up at the start, Katie was still worried.  She looked up at me with her huge brown eyes and asked, "What if I can't do it?".  I assured her that I was already proud of her for all the training she had done.  We'd stay together and cross the finish line one way or another.

I'm so happy for Katie today.  She ran the entire 3.1 miles.  She didn't walk, she didn't stop along the route and she didn't complain.  We talked about books, friends at school, music... anything but running.  Once, she threatened to throw up her Fruity Pebbles but that was a false alarm.

Katie was one of many girls & women who participated in their first race this morning and it was an inspiring sight to see!  Yesterday, I volunteered at packet pick-up.  I felt honored to talk with so many women in their 40's & 50's who said "this is my first race" or "I've never done anything like this before. I'm a little nervous".  Every one said it with a sparkle in her eye that was not so different from the one my 10-year-old had.

I love the way running can bring out the kid in us regardless of our actual age!

Race results are here.

Race photos are here. (No, none of us are in the pictures. But, maybe you are!)

I didn't get any pictures this year- I didn't want to bring the camera out in the rain.  But, here's one that I cherish from last year just for fun.

Do you remember your first race?
