Focus on Kelly Cass, XC runner

It's time to spotlight a kid who is already Running Wild!  Meet Kelly Cass.  She's 10 years old and in the fourth grade.  She spent this fall running on the newly-formed Cross Country team at her elementary school along with her little sister, Lauren.  Kelly was nice enough to answer a few questions about her running experience.  Thanks Kelly!

1. I hear this is your first year on the cross country team at your school.
Is running with a team more fun than running alone?
I like running with my friends because
they make me feel good,
like when they clap and cheer for me.

2. What's the best part of practice? What's the worst part?

The best part is when we play relay race games after we run our mile. The worst part is when we have to run a half mile after we do the relay races and our 1-mile run – I’m tired.

3.  Do you like participating in the meets?  Why or why not?

I didn’t really like the races at the meets because it was hard and everyone runs really, really fast. But, it was still kinda fun to do it with my friends.

4.  How do you like running with your sister?

I don’t like running with my sister at all. She made me cry at the last race because she kept telling me what to do.

5.  Your parents are both really into running.  Does this make you want to run too?
Do you like running with them?

Running is OK. It’s a sport I can do, but I don’t run very much with my mom and dad.
They run really fast.
Kelly heads for the finish line at one of her races!
6.  What distance do you usually run in a race?  What's the farthest you've ever run?

1 mile. The farthest I ever ran was the Turkey Trot 5K, but we walked a lot.

7.  What other sports or activities do you like?

I like swimming and cross country skiing.

8.  Is there a sport that you'd like to try?

Tennis, maybe. Or basketball.

9.  I'm willing to bet that your race t-shirt collection is growing!  Do you have a favorite?

I like the Turkey Trot 2007 with the Transformer, Spiderman and Shrek turkeys on it.

10.  Is there anything you want to tell me about your running that I didn't ask?

I get really proud that I did it when I get awards – like a finisher’s ribbon or a medal.

Next year, our races are 2 miles!

Tomorrow we'll hear from Kelly's sister and teammate, Lauren!
