Off The Couch!

After our first dismal attempt at running I decided that Katie & I needed a plan.  I tried to think about what would appeal to Katie because I knew that another lousy run could turn her off for good.  Katie likes structure and rules.  She wakes up every day asking "what are we doing today?".  She finds comfort in knowing what's ahead and she doesn't love surprises in the schedule.

Three years ago when I started running, I used the Couch to 5K running plan from www.coolrunning.com.  I wasn't sure how this plan would work for a 10 year old, but printed it anyway. We looked it over together and decided that the first 3 weeks looked reasonable.  Katie was alarmed when she looked down the list and saw that eventually she was expected to run 20 continuous minutes, but I encouraged her not to worry about that just now.  We would take this plan one run at a time.

My 8-year-old daughter Mandy is a completely different sort of athlete.  She enjoys runs that are WILD!  We set out at a strolling pace and then she yells "Run to the red mailbox!".  We sprint there and them resume strolling, stopping once in a while to look at bugs and plants and talk to the neighborhood dogs.

I tend to operate more like Katie where runs are concerned.  I pick out an upcoming race and then map out a plan that will get me to the starting line (& hopefully the finish!).  Next weekend I'm running a half marathon.  After that I'd like to learn from Mandy and simply run for the fun of it. Maybe I'll feel like an 8-year-old again... who knows?
